Gazprom hosts sail
Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller launched the Esimit Europa 2 maxi yacht in Cannes on June 10. The 30-meter long and 44-meter high giant beauty with a black carboniferous mast is
the fastest yacht in the world and became the true star of the famous spa during a visit to
the marina close to the Festival Palace.
The new sail yacht built with the use of carbon fiber on the basis of Alfa Romeo yacht has completely transformed due to the latest technologies and electronics. Due to innovations Esimit Europa 2 became the fastest yacht in the world in its class. Built under the patronage of Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, and several European Union institutions the yacht will represent EU countries at the most prestigious regattas. The Esimit Europa 2 project personifies the “world without borders” idea and unification of peoples. All-star crew and support of the European Energy environmental protection movement confirmed the significance of the project.
Addressing the gala christening ceremony of the yacht Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said: “We at Gazprom fully endorse the philosophy of unity and strongly believe that business success can be built only on the foundation of mutual understanding. We assumed the role of the major sponsor of the Esimit Europa 2 project because it is a symbol of border barriers transparency and uniting European nations. The mere fact of the multilingual and multicultural crew, an ensemble of individualities, brought together on board the yacht, is the embodiment of the diversity and unity of Europe from the Atlantic to the Ural Mountains.”
Yacht owner and general manager of the Esimit Europa 2 project Slovenian Igor Simcic said: “I am honored that the idea is supported by a company as reputable as Gazprom, one of the largest energy companies in the world. I am sure that through closer relationships between EU countries and Russia, this continent would represent an important global force that would lead in technology and development, creating a better and brighter future to its residents. The project aims at raising the awareness of European peoples about upcoming changes in energy consumption.”
Esimit Europa 2 will participate in five most prestigious European regattas: Giraglia, Palermo–Monte Carlo, Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, Barcolana and Middle Sea Race. The team which symbolizes united Europe and comprises 25 best yachtsmen of the world including Olympic champions and sailing sport world champions will be headed by Italian skipper Flavio Favini. The team is sponsored by exclusive sparkling wine maker Medot (Slovenia) while Italian Slum is the official technical sponsor.
The victory in the Giraglia Race that began in Saint Tropez (France) on June 16 after the yacht presentation in Cannes confirmed the strong leadership qualities of the Esimit Europa 2 yacht. The team of Igor Simcic competing in the first-past-the-post class (when the winner is the vessel that crossed the finish line first) won the first place. The winners were awarded on June 19 in San Remo Yacht Club (Italy).
